Artis Statement

Through process I have tried to stray away from the concept of "multiple" as it implies materiality and consumerism, versus the ideals of democratization as it relates to the term “edition”. I use multiples as a vehicle to find my true state of finish and create images that offer multiple symbolist mannerisms as possible allegory. My work acts as a foil to the Renaissance Kitsch movement that is the stasis of the present Art world. There is a blurring line between high and low art where kitsch has increasingly influenced Higher art practices. I use vernacular imagery and characters produced with the high craftsmanship of academia and art history. My work is a statement about my foundation and is the mark and voice of my identity and ties me to my past.

I think and create as a mode of scrutinizing my own existence and how I may or may not be a part of the world around me. I work in different media as a means of serving diverse issues, connecting the various materials and treatments to my thoughts as they shift and summate. I am interested in relationships from the microcosm to the macrocosm; my work is witness to the interconnectedness of personal and global perspectives. I view these issues as being same where the concept of “sameness” is the key to solutions; dwelling on differences leads to further segregation and isolation with no clear end in site.

Teaching Philosophy

Teaching Philosophy
Aaron Drew

I promote the media of Printmaking, Drawing, Painting, and Mixed Media while teaching students to become artists. I achieve this goal, first, by instilling the importance of fundamental skills (drafting, color, composition) and, secondly, introducing new materials and technologies, while emphasizing equal treatment between craftsmanship and the conceptual. In doing so, I provide examples to elucidate the evolution of craft and idea as they fall upon the continuum of art history. When teaching, I focus on the construction of imagery. Whether it is monochrome or polychrome, drawing and design are always seen as the core subjects in my courses. I see traditional and contemporary printmaking media as an extension and continuation of drawing and painting. Constructing through layers is proposed so that the student will be able to visualize the process, materials and treatment that an image may require. In addition to cultivating formal underpinnings, I encourage explorative work habits with an interdisciplinary focus. Students are given an opportunity, through mixed media and traditional means, to expand on their own experiences and explore their relationship with the world. The parameters of my assignments are designed to give students a forum to express themselves freely, while thinking intellectually and analytically.
